After Layoffs, New Elder Scrolls Online Content Is Delayed But Still Coming
ZeniMax Online Studios has confirmed that The Elder Scrolls Online will continue development despite significant layoffs that eliminated over 200 positions, including former game director Joseph Burba. New co-head Nick Giacomini released an updated roadmap on July 30, reaffirming the studio’s commitment to the long-running MMORPG and addressing speculation about the game’s future.
However, the reduced team size has forced major scheduling adjustments. Several previously announced updates, including the combat and class refresh and Update 52, have been pushed from 2026 to 2027 or beyond. Giacomini emphasized that the studio is prioritizing “quality experiences over calendar dates,” giving teams “the runway they need to do things right” rather than rushing to meet established deadlines.
Despite the setbacks, ZeniMax stressed the game “is here to stay” and the studio is not merely attempting to maintain the title but continue its evolution. The revised timeline reflects an effort to balance the reduced workforce with meaningful content delivery to players. The changes are part of Microsoft’s broader restructuring of its gaming operations following recent Xbox organizational shifts.
