Square Enix can’t confirm a Final Fantasy 7 Revelation physical disc, but at least game director Hamaguchi is pushing for one

Final Fantasy 7: Revelation, the third and final installment of Square Enix’s FF7 remake trilogy, is scheduled to launch in spring 2027. However, its physical media future remains uncertain, as Square Enix has not yet made an official decision on whether to release the game on PlayStation 5 disc.

The uncertainty is tied to Sony’s recent announcement that it will stop manufacturing PlayStation discs in January 2028—just months after Revelation’s planned launch. While the timing theoretically allows for a physical release, Square Enix is reportedly still weighing the decision internally.

Game Director Naoki Hamaguchi expressed his support for a physical edition in a July 29 interview at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin. He told GamesRadar+ that he is actively “pushing for” a physical release and believes “it would be a shame” if physical games disappeared entirely. However, he acknowledged that “the general trend” across the industry is shifting away from physical media toward digital distribution, and stressed that he cannot confirm any definitive details at this time. Square Enix leadership is still “having internal discussions” on the matter.

Hamaguchi’s advocacy reflects broader industry concerns about the transition to all-digital gaming, despite digital sales currently dominating the market. The final decision on Revelation’s physical release will ultimately depend on Square Enix’s business assessment, with an official confirmation expected as the game’s launch approaches.
