Halo: Campaign Evolved’s ‘death barriers’ and ungenerous out-of-bounds restrictions are making the 42 skull grind a real bore

Halo: Campaign Evolved has launched to all players following a five-day early access period for Premium Edition pre-order holders. The title represents a substantial remake rather than a simple remaster of the original 2001 game, featuring extensive redesigns throughout the campaign—particularly in the back half where the notoriously repetitive and difficult Flood sections have been significantly reworked.

However, not all changes have resonated positively with players. A prominent complaint emerging from the community centers on the game’s “death barriers” and restrictive out-of-bounds limitations, which players argue make the challenge of grinding for all 42 skulls unnecessarily tedious and frustrating. These design choices appear to limit exploration and alternative approaches to level progression, contributing to a sense that the remake’s modifications haven’t universally improved the experience despite their intent to address issues from the original.
