The creative team behind 2021’s most overlooked neo-noir thriller is back with a stunning yakuza movie

The creative team behind the acclaimed anime mystery series Odd Taxi is making its feature film debut with The Last Blossom, a neo-noir thriller centered on a former yakuza member. Directed by Baku Kinoshita and written by Kazuya Konomoto, the film is produced by Studio CLAP and marks the team’s first original feature project following the success of their acclaimed television work.

The story follows Akutsu, a career yakuza member serving a life sentence after an unremarkable career in organized crime. As he approaches the end of his life, his only companion is a flower growing from a discarded can—a poetic detail that provides the film’s emotional center.

The Last Blossom arrives in U.S. theaters through a special two-night theatrical event hosted by GKIDS on August 30-31, 2026, presented in Japanese with English subtitles. The limited theatrical engagement suggests a curated release targeting devoted anime fans and cinephiles. Studio CLAP’s previous work includes Pompo: The Cinephile, demonstrating the studio’s commitment to cinema-focused narratives. Given Kinoshita’s acclaimed work on Odd Taxi—known for intricate plotting and distinctive visual style—this feature-length exploration of yakuza life and human connection is generating significant anticipation within the anime community.
