‘We Are a Little Bit Masochistic’ — Developers Are Running Scared of Baldur’s Gate 4, but Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Studio Owlcat Would Consider It a ‘Great Challenge’
With Baldur’s Gate 3’s phenomenal success, the prospect of a fourth installment has left many developers hesitant about meeting the towering expectations set by Larian Studios’ acclaimed third game. Larian has declined to develop Baldur’s Gate 4, instead focusing on new Divinity projects, leaving the franchise’s future in limbo.
This departure has sparked industry speculation about which studio could tackle such a daunting sequel. Owlcat Games, the developer behind the well-received Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader and other acclaimed CRPGs, has expressed willingness to take on the project. Rather than attempting to replicate Baldur’s Gate 3’s formula, Owlcat stated they would view it as a “great challenge” and would prioritize creating something distinct rather than simply copying what came before.
The reluctance from many studios reflects the immense pressure of following one of gaming’s most successful and critically acclaimed RPGs, making Baldur’s Gate 4 one of the most daunting sequel prospects in the industry.
