PSA: Don’t execute PowerShell commands proffered by Steam forum randos, because it could infect your rig with a cryptominer
A new scam is targeting Steam users through the platform’s community discussion forums. Bad actors pose as helpful community members and reply to legitimate problem-solving posts with malicious advice. When users follow the instructions to run specific PowerShell commands as administrator, they unknowingly download and install cryptominers onto their gaming PCs.
The scam exploits the trust users place in peer-to-peer support within Steam’s forums, which are often a legitimate and reliable source for game troubleshooting. By disguising malware distribution as technical fixes, attackers can hijack system resources to mine cryptocurrency without the victim’s knowledge or consent.
This warning highlights the security risks present in open online gaming communities. Users are advised to exercise extreme caution when following technical instructions from unknown sources, particularly those requiring administrative-level PowerShell commands. Legitimate developers and support channels rarely ask users to execute obscure commands as a fix. Gamers should verify advice through official sources when possible and remain skeptical of unsolicited technical guidance, regardless of how credible the community forum appears.
