Who is Barbatos? Batman: Caped Crusader’s weirdest villain explained

Prime Video’s Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 introduces Barbatos, a lesser-known Batman villain making his first major screen adaptation. The supernatural antagonist appears in episode 4, titled “The Devil’s Due,” where Batman becomes entangled in a murder mystery orchestrated by a cult devoted to the demon bat god.

In the episode, a burglar is murdered and a bat is painted in blood at the crime scene, causing Batman to be falsely accused of the killing. The truth reveals that the crime is actually the work of a cult that worships Barbatos. The cultists believe that by performing blood sacrifices and offering treasure to their demon bat god, they can summon or appease Barbatos.

Barbatos represents one of the show’s “weirder” villain roster for season 2, which otherwise focuses on more familiar Batman adversaries including the Riddler, the Joker, and Scarecrow. The inclusion of such an obscure antagonist demonstrates the show’s willingness to draw from deeper comic book lore beyond the rogues gallery casual fans might recognize. The cult angle adds a horror element to the Batman universe, transforming the villain from a traditional supervillain into a more supernatural, occult-based threat centered around religious fanaticism and dark rituals.
