Guillermo Del Toro Begged For An Easier Dead Cells, And The Game’s Devs Answered His Call

Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has appealed to Motion Twin to create an easier version of Dead Cells, the studio’s challenging 2018 roguelike-metroidvania. In a July 29 IGN interview, del Toro requested a mode that removes respawning mechanics, citing the difficulty this creates for older players trying to explore the game world. The repeated deaths and restarts, he argued, make it hard to experience the game’s content.

Motion Twin responded to del Toro’s request by reminding him that accessibility options already exist within Dead Cells. The game already provides options that allow players of varying skill levels to customize their experience, including difficulty adjustments and progression alternatives.

The exchange underscores growing attention to accessibility in gaming. While roguelike titles are traditionally challenging by design, many developers now include adjustable difficulty settings or alternative modes to make games more inclusive. Del Toro’s public appeal, made by a prominent filmmaker, brings mainstream visibility to discussions about making challenging games more accessible to different player demographics.
