Disney Lorcana just revealed its answer to Magic’s Commander format

Disney Lorcana, the trading card game featuring characters and worlds from Disney and Pixar, has unveiled its answer to Magic: The Gathering’s hugely popular Commander format. The initiative was announced during Gen Con 2026, which took place in Indianapolis from July 30 through August 2, with playtesting of the new format beginning during the event.

The codename for this new format cleverly references “Consider the Coconut,” a memorable line from Disney’s Moana, showing the development team’s attention to thematic detail. This playful nod demonstrates how Disney Lorcana seeks to infuse its design with character and personality alongside competitive gameplay mechanics.

In Magic: The Gathering, the traditional format is primarily 1v1 play with relatively loose deck construction rules, allowing players significant freedom in building their decks. Commander, which emerged as a fan-favorite format, has become hugely popular due to its unique gameplay experience and appeal to both casual and competitive players. Disney Lorcana’s decision to develop its own equivalent format suggests the company recognizes the appeal of this style of play to its player base.

This format expansion represents Disney Lorcana’s continued efforts to diversify its gameplay offerings and maintain player engagement. By introducing a Commander-like format, the game is likely attempting to attract players who enjoy the social, multiplayer aspects and creative deck-building freedom that made Magic’s Commander format such a success. The playtesting phase will be crucial in refining the format before its official release.
