Magic: The Gathering likely to get a World of Warcraft set with D&D crossover

Wizards of the Coast announced at Gen Con that it will expand its Universes Beyond crossover strategy to Dungeons & Dragons, marking a significant evolution in how the company approaches intellectual property collaboration. The expansion begins with a D&D: World of Warcraft crossover product, which almost certainly signals an incoming Magic: The Gathering set based on Blizzard’s World of Warcraft universe.

The Universes Beyond initiative, despite community controversy, has proven to be a lucrative strategy for Magic, allowing the card game to incorporate settings and characters from external intellectual properties. This marks the first major application of the model to D&D, Wizards’ flagship tabletop roleplaying game, effectively transforming both games into platforms for licensed content.

Wizards announced three Universes Beyond sets at MagicCon: Amsterdam in July, with additional reveals planned for MagicCon: Atlanta in November. At least one upcoming set is expected to be Marvel-related, continuing a multiyear partnership between Wizards and Marvel that began with releases including Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2025.

The World of Warcraft collaboration demonstrates Wizards’ confidence in Universes Beyond as a revenue driver. By bringing popular external franchises into both Magic and D&D, the company is diversifying its product portfolio and appealing to audiences beyond traditional fans. For players and collectors, this means an expanding ecosystem of themed products, though ongoing debate continues within the community about whether such crossovers align with each game’s core identity.
