Nexus Mods finally tightens the screws on AI, though it’s still playing softball with the tide of slop
Nexus Mods has updated its policy on generative AI-made content, dividing its single AI-generated tag into three more specific categories to improve searchability and content classification. The change represents an effort to tighten disclosure requirements for AI usage in mods while allowing such content to remain on the platform.
Under Nexus Mods’ rules, AI-generated mods are permitted provided they don’t violate intellectual property rights or use assets without permission and are properly tagged. However, the proliferation of AI tools has created significant problems within the modding community. Issues include voice actors’ likenesses being repurposed for NSFW content without consent, low-quality code generated through AI, and a flood of poorly-created AI-generated artwork that diminishes the user experience.
The refined tagging system now carries enforcement teeth—mods that are incorrectly tagged or fail to disclose generative AI usage may face moderation action. Nexus Mods is also encouraging community members to report any mistagged content to help maintain standards.
While the policy update signals an attempt to address AI-related concerns more rigorously, it remains relatively permissive compared to stricter approaches other platforms might adopt. The update reflects Nexus Mods’ ongoing challenge in balancing creator freedom with the need to curb low-quality AI-generated content flooding its platform.
