PS5 Is Closing In On 100 Million Sales, But It’s Losing Ground To The PS4

Sony’s PlayStation 5 has reached 95.3 million lifetime sales as of June 30, 2026, but faces headwinds as new console interest wanes. The company sold 1.6 million PS5 units during the first quarter of fiscal year 2026 (April-June), representing a 36% year-on-year decline compared to the same period in 2025, though it showed modest growth from the previous quarter’s 1.5 million units.

The sales slowdown reflects broader challenges facing the console, particularly the rising cost of hardware. Unlike its predecessor, the PS5 has not benefited from the regular price discounts that helped the PS4 dominate its lifecycle. Supply chain constraints, specifically shortages of RAM and other critical components, have necessitated price increases for the PS5 at a time when consumers are more price-sensitive.

The PS5 is on track to eventually surpass the PS4’s lifetime sales of 100.2 million units, but the pace has significantly slowed. The PS4 achieved similar sales milestones with the advantage of declining MSRPs and frequent promotional pricing over its lifecycle—benefits the PS5 has not enjoyed. The console also faces increasing competition from other gaming platforms and shifting consumer preferences toward digital software, which has continued to outpace physical media sales.
