Sony vows to press on with discless plans, saying “digitalization is progressing” across all media despite heavy protest from players

Sony has firmly reaffirmed its controversial decision to end PlayStation game disc production beginning January 2028, despite substantial backlash from the gaming community. During its Q1 2026 financial results call, Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao acknowledged the criticism but confirmed the company will not reverse course, stating it will “cautiously move this forward.”

Sony’s primary justification is that content digitalization has been progressively expanding across all media. The company asserts it foresees no negative business impact, as a substantial portion of game sales are already digital. Sony is exploring engagement strategies within a “future digital ecosystem” and discussing the transition with retailers.

The announcement sparked significant opposition centered on game preservation, ownership rights, offline access, and the ability to resell games. Backlash has included online petitions, social media campaigns, and scheduled boycotts. Despite the controversy, Sony’s Games & Network Services segment reported flat Q1 sales, though operating income rose 37% primarily due to US tariff refunds.

Lin Tao emphasized Sony invested considerable thought in the decision, suggesting the company views the shift to all-digital as inevitable for the platform’s future.
