Dungeons & Dragons is Getting an Official Star Wars Expansion
Dungeons & Dragons is expanding its intellectual property reach through official crossovers with major franchises. At Gen Con 2026, Wizards of the Coast announced that Star Wars will be coming to D&D as part of the “Season of Rebellion” in 2027, marking the second addition to the Universes Beyond initiative.
The Universes Beyond strategy, which has been successfully employed in Magic: The Gathering, will bring licensed properties to D&D alongside the company’s original settings. The Star Wars expansion follows the previously announced World of Warcraft crossover, which will include every playable WoW race and class—including Pandaren—reimagined for D&D’s ruleset.
The announcement was made at the culmination of the D&D Vision keynote presentation, with Darth Vader making a surprise appearance on stage to reveal the crossover. Hasbro has stated that the Universes Beyond expansions are “additive” to D&D’s existing roadmap and that the company has expanded its staff to support the initiative.
Some in the gaming community have expressed concern about the strategy’s implications, with observers noting the lucrative but sometimes controversial nature of Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond approach. Questions remain about which other major properties might eventually make their way into D&D through this new licensing model, though the company has committed to maintaining its core fantasy identity alongside these crossovers.
