Xbox CEO declares priorities after ‘reset’
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has unveiled a comprehensive strategic roadmap for the platform’s recovery following a major restructuring that eliminated 3,200 jobs and divested four studios. The announcement comes after Xbox reported a $1.7 billion revenue decline in the previous fiscal year.
Sharma’s recovery plan centers on four key pillars, termed the “Four C’s”: Core, Content, Creation, and Connection. The Core strategy prioritizes a console-led platform, with Game Pass, Windows, and streaming as supporting services. The Content pillar focuses on developing major franchises into global properties, with particular emphasis on established titles like Fallout. The Creation initiative aims to establish Minecraft as “the world’s creator platform,” while Connection involves extending existing gaming worlds and franchises that resonate with players.
The restructuring signals a deliberate shift away from what Sharma characterized as an unhealthy industry climate. The layoffs and studio departures are intended to concentrate resources on high-impact franchises while broadening appeal to casual audiences.
Looking ahead, Xbox and Microsoft have committed to returning to revenue growth by the end of fiscal year 2027. Sharma has set an even more ambitious long-term target: reaching more than a billion people daily, with the goal of achieving the halfway point by 2030. These metrics reflect a strategic pivot toward both sustainability and significant expansion in Xbox’s market reach. As Sharma stated, “We will not live on past successes or be trapped by past failures,” emphasizing the need to invest in what players value and create experiences built to endure.
