The voice of Shinji in Evangelion says AI voice cloning is ‘heartbreaking,’ calls for Japanese government to intervene
Japanese voice actor Megumi Ogata, known for voicing Shinji in Neon Genesis Evangelion as well as roles in Danganronpa and Persona, has spoken out against AI voice cloning, calling the practice “heartbreaking” and urging government intervention.
In an interview with TBS News Dig, Ogata expressed concern over the prevalence of AI voice imitators on social media platforms like TikTok, stating it was an issue she “cannot turn a blind eye to.” She emphasized that her voice represents a core part of her identity and expressed confusion about why someone would create AI versions to make her say unauthorized statements.
The comments come as the Japanese government considers establishing a new legal framework to protect voice actors and performers from unauthorized AI reproduction, similar to existing likeness rights. This regulatory effort reflects growing concerns within the entertainment industry about AI technology being used to replicate performers’ voices without consent.
Ogata’s remarks highlight the tension between technological innovation and creative professional rights. The potential legislation represents an attempt by Japanese authorities to establish clearer protections for voice performers as AI voice generation technology becomes increasingly sophisticated and accessible.
