48 years later, anime’s most beautiful sci-fi space epic is officially making a comeback
Nearly five decades after its original debut, Galaxy Express 999, one of anime’s most celebrated sci-fi space epics, is making a theatrical comeback. The announcement was made on July 25 via the official X account of the franchise’s creator, the late Leiji Matsumoto.
The new animated film will be produced by Toei Animation, the same studio responsible for the original 1978 series and the acclaimed 1979 film. Veteran director Rintaro, who previously helmed the 1979 Galaxy Express 999 movie, is contributing the story concept for the new project.
Makiko Matsumoto, the eldest daughter of Leiji Matsumoto and representative director of his company Leijisha, shared a heartfelt message celebrating the announcement. The revival represents a significant moment in anime history, bringing back one of the medium’s most visually stunning and narratively influential space adventures. With Toei Animation’s production expertise and Rintaro’s creative direction, the project appears poised to honor the franchise’s legacy while introducing Galaxy Express 999 to new audiences.
