“It’s not great news”: Halo: Campaign Evolved on the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme shows how far Windows on Arm gaming still has to go

Halo: Campaign Evolved, the recently launched reimagining of the legendary Halo title, faces a significant technical barrier on Windows on Arm devices. A major texture bug renders the game unplayable on Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme processor, despite the chip’s high performance capabilities. YouTuber Ghobso Gaming discovered the rendering issue while testing the title on a Snapdragon X2-powered laptop.

The game, available on Game Pass across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5, demonstrates that while console and traditional x86 PC versions run adequately, the Windows on Arm version remains fundamentally incompatible. This disparity highlights persistent technical challenges facing ARM-based gaming on Windows, including limited driver optimization, variable DirectX translation layers, and an immature ecosystem compared to traditional x86 platforms.

Despite the industry’s push toward ARM-based Windows laptops as viable gaming machines, this issue underscores how far the platform still must go for AAA title compatibility. The texture bug is severe enough to compromise the entire gaming experience, suggesting that developer optimization and driver maturity remain critical bottlenecks. The incident serves as a reality check: even flagship mobile processors struggle with demanding modern titles when running Windows on Arm, indicating that the platform requires substantial further development before achieving feature parity with conventional x86 gaming infrastructure.
