Nier Replicant mod adds the remaster’s biggest missing feature

The 2021 remaster of Nier Replicant has been missing a notable feature from the original 2010 release: the ability to play as Father Nier, the older protagonist from the Gestalt version. In the original 2010 release, the game shipped with two distinct versions—Replicant on PS3 in Japan featuring a young protagonist called Brother Nier, and Gestalt on Xbox 360 (also Japan-exclusive) starring an older Father Nier. While story and gameplay remained largely identical, the relationship dynamic with the character Yonah differed significantly, portraying her as either a sister or daughter figure depending on the protagonist.

Global audiences historically only received the Gestalt version. However, when Square Enix released the remastered Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139 in 2021, they included only Brother Nier as the playable protagonist, effectively removing the series’ signature dual-protagonist option that had defined the original experience. A talented modder has now rectified this omission by creating a modification that restores the ability to play as Father Nier in the remaster, reintroducing one of the game’s most significant features that was lost in the modernization effort.

The mod represents an interesting case of community-driven game preservation, allowing players to experience the full scope of protagonist options that were originally available in the 2010 releases.
