Making Baldur’s Gate 4 would be “a great challenge” for Rogue Trader devs Owlcat, co-founder says, as the studio reiterate their commitment to CRPGs

Owlcat Games’ co-founder Alexander Mishulin has responded enthusiastically to the prospect of developing Baldur’s Gate 4, describing it as both a “great honour” and a “great challenge” for the studio. In an interview with IGN, Mishulin reaffirmed the developer’s commitment to computer RPGs while addressing speculation about their potential involvement with the storied franchise.

The comments come as other developers have already been considered for the role. Archetype Entertainment, creators of the upcoming Mass Effect-style RPG Exodus, was previously offered the opportunity to lead a Baldur’s Gate successor. Larian Studios currently holds the franchise rights following the monumental success of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Owlcat has built its reputation on faithful, mechanically rich CRPG experiences rooted in tabletop gaming systems, including acclaimed titles like Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous. The studio’s enthusiastic response to the hypothetical suggests they view a potential BG4 project as an exciting prospect aligned with their design philosophy. With The Expanse: Osiris Reborn in development, Owlcat continues to demonstrate its capacity for ambitious RPG projects.

Mishulin’s characterization of the project as a great challenge suggests the studio has realistic expectations about the scope required to succeed a title of Baldur’s Gate 3’s magnitude.
