PlayStation 5 sales have topped 95 million units worldwide

Sony’s PlayStation 5 console has surpassed 95 million units sold globally, marking a significant milestone for the gaming platform. However, the company’s latest fiscal report reveals that the system is experiencing the typical sales slowdown expected as it approaches its seventh year on the market.

According to Sony’s first-quarter financial results for the period ending June 30, 2026, the Games & Network Services (G&NS) segment saw essentially flat year-over-year sales. This stagnation was driven by declining sales of both PS5 hardware and third-party software titles. The platform’s maturity in the market has led consumers to reduce their purchasing activity.

Despite the plateauing console sales, Sony reported a 37 percent increase in operating income for the segment. This improvement was significantly bolstered by unexpected financial relief: the company is receiving approximately $510 million in U.S. tariff refunds during fiscal year 2026. This represents a substantial windfall that helped offset the revenue pressures from declining hardware and software sales.

The slowdown marks a natural transition point for the PS5, which has established itself as a commercially successful console. With over 95 million units sold, it remains one of the most popular gaming platforms in history. The findings suggest that the industry may be entering a period where hardware sales stabilize, and the focus shifts toward maintaining software engagement and exploring next-generation platforms.
