Gigabyte has announced a new series of AM4 motherboards called the B550 X Series, marking an unexpected revival of the aging socket. The move comes as the memory crisis continues to impact hardware pricing and availability, making high-end upgrades prohibitively expensive for consumers.
Rather than pushing customers toward newer platforms, Gigabyte is positioning the B550 X Series as “the most powerful refresh of the AM4 platform motherboard,” specifically engineered to work with older generation processors like the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Despite launching in 2022, Gigabyte claims the 5800X3D remains “the best cost-to-performance processor on the market”—a telling statement about the current state of PC hardware pricing.
The strategy reflects a broader market reality: new generations of CPUs, motherboards, and memory have become so expensive that four-year-old components now offer the best value proposition for budget-conscious builders and upgraders.
