Riot Loosens League of Legends Community Event Restrictions, Opening Way for More Third-Party LoL Events
Riot Games announced new ‘LoL Esports Community Competition Guidelines’ that significantly loosen restrictions on third-party League of Legends tournaments and competitions. The updated guidelines remove hard caps on entry fees, sponsorship revenue, prize pools, and spectator ticketing, enabling community organizers to scale events at nearly any level.
Previously, these restrictions limited the ability of third parties to monetize community competitions. The new framework gives organizers substantially more flexibility in how they structure and finance their events. However, Riot has retained certain constraints regarding sponsor eligibility, ensuring that sponsored events still align with the publisher’s brand guidelines and standards.
This policy shift reflects Riot’s broader efforts to support and expand the competitive League of Legends ecosystem beyond official Riot-run events. By reducing barriers to entry for tournament organizers, the company aims to cultivate a more vibrant grassroots esports scene and increase opportunities for players and communities to participate in organized competitions.
