With Avatar’s Future Still Uncertain, James Cameron Now Says He Wants to Prioritize ‘Other Stories’ For the ‘Last Act’ of His Career
James Cameron has indicated he may be ready to move beyond the Avatar franchise as Disney continues to delay production greenlight for two planned sequels. With Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 pencilled in for release over the next five years, the studio has not yet authorized production to begin.
The uncertainty surrounding these sequels stems from the financial performance of Avatar: Fire and Ash, released in 2025. While the film earned a substantial $1.4 billion globally, it represents a notable decline from prior entries in the franchise. The film earned roughly half the revenue of the original Avatar ($2.9 billion) and significantly underperformed compared to Avatar: The Way of Water.
Cameron stated he wants to prioritize exploring other stories for what he described as the “last act” of his career. His comments suggest the director may be losing enthusiasm for continuing the multi-film Avatar saga, particularly given the series’ demonstrated ability to still generate massive box office returns despite showing diminishing returns.
