Marvel Rivals’ next update drastically reduces the game’s install size on PC and console

Marvel Rivals’ season 9.5 update, launching August 7, will implement a “massive texture compression overhaul” to significantly reduce the game’s install footprint across platforms. On PC, the game will shrink by 40GB, reducing the current 124GB installation to approximately 84GB—a reduction of over 57 percent. Console players will also benefit, with PS5 and Xbox versions shrinking by 15GB, bringing the installation size down from 73GB to 58GB, a roughly 20 percent reduction.

Developer NetEase emphasized that these dramatic file size reductions come without any compromise to the game’s stylized graphics quality. The optimization addresses a common pain point for live-service titles, which tend to balloon in size as content updates accumulate over time and development cycles.

The season 9.5 update also brings new gameplay content, including the addition of The Hood as a playable hero and a new wave of swimsuit cosmetics. However, players should note that the installation overhaul will require a complete redownload of the game rather than a simple patch update.

This optimization effort reflects the industry’s growing awareness of storage constraints, particularly on console platforms where SSD space remains limited without hardware upgrades.
