A special weapon was forged to create Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s brutal blade sound effects: ‘We wanted that very raw, kind of rough feel’

Capcom employed an unconventional yet authentic approach to creating weapon sound effects for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, a game centered on sword dueling. According to audio director Shunichi Suwa, who spoke during a hands-on session at Capcom’s Osaka headquarters, the sound team used real swords and scabbards to record blade strikes and sheathing actions, prioritizing immersion over purely synthetic audio.

The decision reflects a deliberate design philosophy: Suwa revealed the team aimed to capture a “very raw, kind of rough feel” for the blade sound effects, departing from heavily processed audio in favor of genuine, unpolished weapon sounds. This grounding in real-world acoustics ensures that the dueling sequences—a core gameplay element—resonate with authentic combat feedback.

Suwa’s oversight extends beyond weapon effects to encompass the game’s broader soundscape, including music and environmental audio that complement its samurai-inspired setting. This comprehensive attention to sound design underscores Capcom’s commitment to creating an immersive and visceral combat experience that enhances player engagement through meticulous auditory detail.
