Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope Gets Welsh Language Dub
Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope is receiving a Welsh language dub ahead of the film’s 50th anniversary in 2027, marking a significant localization effort for the iconic science fiction classic. Lucasfilm and Disney announced the project Tuesday in partnership with S4C, Wales’s Welsh-language public broadcaster, and the Welsh Government’s Creative Wales initiative.
The Welsh version, titled Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd (Welsh for “A New Hope”), will premiere on December 25, 2026, on S4C and its associated platforms. The timing positions the release to coincide with celebration of the film’s 50th anniversary, which marks five decades since the original film’s 1977 release.
The voice cast for the Welsh dub features notable Welsh actors and talent. Osian Morgan voices Luke Skywalker, while Matthew Rhys (known for Widow’s Bay) takes on the role of Han Solo, with additional cast members to be announced.
This localization effort represents a meaningful investment in Welsh language media and culture, utilizing support from Creative Wales to produce a professional dub of the internationally recognized film. By introducing Star Wars to Welsh-speaking audiences in their native language, the project both preserves and promotes the Welsh language while making the beloved film accessible to a wider demographic.
The partnership between major entertainment entities and Welsh cultural institutions demonstrates commitment to maintaining minority language media and bringing mainstream global content into local languages.
