Banned Steam horror game gets physical release in defiance of Valve
Vile: Exhumed, a narrative horror game featuring full-motion video created by Final Girl Games, was removed from Steam after its release due to Valve’s payment processor restrictions. The game explores parasocial relationships and addresses sensitive topics including sexual assault, though it is not an adult game. Its removal became a high-profile example of how payment processor policies can effectively censor games regardless of their actual content.
One year later, creator Cara Cadaver (Final Girl Games) is releasing a physical version of the game for $10, both to preserve access for fans and as a protest against Valve’s censorship policies. Players can sign up to be notified when the physical release becomes available.
The move highlights the industry’s ongoing tensions around digital platform content moderation and demonstrates how independent developers are leveraging physical media as an alternative distribution channel. It underscores the role of traditional media formats in game preservation and the complex relationship between payment processors, platform policies, and creative freedom in gaming.
