Indie Game Bundle Aiding Laid-Off Developers Is Nearing $200,000 Raised
A charity bundle on Itch.io supporting laid-off game developers is nearing $200,000 in fundraising, far exceeding its initial $100,000 goal with one week remaining. The Game Industry Hardship Fund bundle features 127 indie games available for a minimum price of $10, with all proceeds directed toward helping displaced developers cover everyday living expenses. Notable titles included in the collection feature indie games like Skatebird, A Short Hike, and Arranger, offering players quality entertainment while providing direct financial support for those affected by the industry’s recent employment crisis.
The initiative was created by Brandon Sheffield, director of Necrosoft Games, in collaboration with United Videogame Workers, a CWA-affiliated union representing game industry employees. The bundle represents a grassroots response to the repeated waves of mass layoffs that have swept through the game development sector over the past two years, affecting thousands of workers across major studios and publishers. By aggregating games from multiple developers and channeling funds to those impacted by these layoffs, the effort demonstrates both industry solidarity and a practical approach to emergency financial assistance for the game development community during an ongoing period of significant workforce reductions.
