Magic: The Gathering continues to expand its Tolkien-inspired offerings with a new Hobbit-themed set, following the successful Lord of the Rings collection. The set introduces multiple versions of iconic characters’ equipment, including three distinct versions of Sting, the legendary sword from Bilbo’s journey. While the previous Lord of the Rings set featured Sting as an artifact and an instant card, the new Hobbit set introduces a third incarnation called Sting, Bilbo’s Sword, utilizing a fresh “hone” mechanic that allows players to add +1/+0 to equipped creatures—a mechanic particularly emphasized on dwarf cards.
The design philosophy emphasizes flavor and thematic gameplay, with numerous Hobbit-themed cards drawing power from food tokens, a mechanic that appeared in the earlier Lord of the Rings expansion. With dwarves playing a major role in The Hobbit narrative, the new set heavily integrates dwarven characters and mechanics, creating cohesive mechanical and thematic gameplay experiences for players engaging with Middle-earth’s stories.
