Marvel Comics Is Finally Stealing One of DC’s Best Ideas
Marvel Comics has announced new collected editions for Jonathan Hickman’s Ultimate universe that may finally match DC’s success with its Compact Comics line. DC introduced Compact Comics in 2023, launching smaller and more affordable paperback collections of popular comic runs. The strategy proved remarkably successful, offering fans a more accessible and budget-friendly way to read acclaimed story arcs.
Marvel’s response will be new collected editions for the first year of the Ultimate universe, with each paperback collecting 12 issues of Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate Black Panther, Ultimate X-Men, and Ultimates. While these series already have traditional trade paperback versions available, the significance lies in the new format Marvel is employing for these editions.
According to the announcement from Marvel Comics’ official X account, these new editions represent the publisher’s effort to compete with DC’s increasingly popular Compact Comics line. The move demonstrates how Marvel has been observing DC’s success with this publishing approach and is now moving to adopt a similar strategy for its own high-profile series.
The shift reflects broader trends in comics publishing, where both major publishers are experimenting with different formats and price points to reach broader audiences. By offering smaller, cheaper alternatives to standard trade paperbacks, publishers can capture readers who may be priced out of traditional collections or prefer more compact physical editions.
