Minecraft finally has a Switch 2 release date, but there may be bad news for Switch 1 owners
Minecraft is officially coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, 2026. The port was initially leaked through an ESRB rating in June before Nintendo officially confirmed it during a Direct showcase, though the developer did not provide a release date at that time.
Microsoft’s Mojang studio has now made the announcement official, with the Switch 2 version receiving upgrades in line with other platforms, including exclusive content for the system. However, the announcement includes a significant caveat for existing Switch 1 owners: while a “digital upgrade path” will be available for current Minecraft owners to transition to the Switch 2 version, the upgrade will not be free. Mojang said to expect more details on pricing and upgrade options in the future.
The Nintendo Switch 2 has been available for just over a year, making this Minecraft upgrade one of the most anticipated releases for the console.
