Another Blockchain Game Studio Shuts Down As Crypto Trend Sputters Out

Proof of Play, a blockchain gaming startup founded by FarmVille co-creator Amitt Mahajan, has announced its shutdown, marking another casualty in the collapsing crypto gaming industry. The studio closed roughly one year after discontinuing its flagship title, Pirate Nation.

The company had positioned itself at the intersection of casual gameplay and cryptocurrency, attempting to combine familiar gaming mechanics with blockchain-based token rewards and player-owned NFT assets. In a post announcing the closure, the team reflected on their ambitions: “When we started out, we believed games using blockchain tech had the potential to usher in a new, decentralized internet.”

However, Proof of Play ultimately could not sustain the business model at scale. “We couldn’t build a product and sustainable business that proved out this thesis,” the studio acknowledged in its announcement. The shutdown exemplifies the broader challenges facing the crypto gaming sector, which has struggled to achieve mainstream adoption despite significant investment and industry enthusiasm in recent years. The premise of combining cryptocurrency incentives with gaming has largely failed to resonate with players, who have been skeptical of both the technology and its integration into gaming experiences.

The closure underscores the gap between the blockchain gaming industry’s aspirations—to create decentralized, player-owned virtual economies—and market reality, where traditional gaming models continue to dominate.
