A new PS5 firmware beta update is here, and it’s good news for PS5 Pro owners
Sony has released a new PlayStation 5 firmware beta update that makes significant changes to how the PS5 Pro handles upscaling. The most notable feature is that PSSR 2.0 (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution 2.0) is now set as the default upscaling technology for all games on PS5 Pro, rather than only being enabled for titles that explicitly support it.
PSSR was one of the PS5 Pro’s key selling points at launch, but the original implementation received mixed reception from players and critics. Sony addressed these concerns by releasing PSSR 2.0 in March 2026, which brought substantial improvements to visual quality and performance. The upgraded version was much better received than its predecessor.
With this beta firmware update, Sony is expanding PSSR 2.0’s reach by making it the default upscaling solution across the PS5 Pro’s library. Players can still opt out of PSSR 2.0 if they prefer, but the default setting now ensures that more games will benefit from the improved upscaling technology without requiring individual optimization from developers.
This change is particularly significant for PS5 Pro owners who invested in the more expensive console specifically for its enhanced capabilities. By making PSSR 2.0 the default, Sony is ensuring that the hardware’s AI upscaling advantages apply more broadly to the game library, even for older titles that weren’t specifically designed with PSSR 2.0 in mind.
