The late actor Sam Neill will make a posthumous appearance in Sony Pictures’ upcoming live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, directed by Wes Ball. Neill, who passed away on July 13, 2026, at age 78 from pneumonia, filmed his role in the film before production wrapped in April. The nature of his character remains undisclosed, though this appears to be one of his final performances.
Neill, a legendary New Zealand actor best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park trilogy, also earned critical acclaim for roles in films including Possession, In the Mouth of Madness, and Event Horizon, as well as the television series Peaky Blinders.
The Zelda film’s ensemble cast continues to take shape. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is set to play Link, while Bo Bragason will portray Princess Zelda. Additional cast members include Severance actor Dichen Lachman as Impa, Yvonne Strahovski—known for The Handmaid’s Tale and Mass Effect 2—in an unspecified royal role, and Uli Latukefu as the antagonist Ganondorf.
