Overwatch’s new mech hero is the sword-and-board sequel to D.Va, except her code isn’t ‘a plate of spaghetti’ under the hood

D.Mon is a new mech-based hero coming to Overwatch who will join D.Va as the second member of Korea’s MEKA Squad. The character, whose real name is Yuna Lee, is a former esports champion and mech pilot. Unlike D.Va, who has a more aggressive, front-facing playstyle, D.Mon was intentionally designed to fill a different role—one focused on team leadership and support.

D.Mon’s design philosophy emphasizes the “sword and board” combat archetype, drawing inspiration from the Armored Core games and Gundam anime. This distinct approach sets her apart from her teammate and reflects Blizzard’s intention to give the two MEKA Squad members different personalities and gameplay styles.

One key distinction in D.Mon’s development is her underlying code architecture. When Blizzard first revealed D.Va back in 2018, game director Aaron Keller described her programming as “a plate of spaghetti” due to how she transitions out of her mech. In the game’s engine, D.Va’s mech-less form is actually treated as a separate hero, which created numerous technical complications and bugs over the years. With D.Mon, Blizzard specifically sought to avoid repeating these architectural mistakes, according to lead hero producer Kenny Hudson. The new hero was built with cleaner, more maintainable code from the ground up.
