Why GTA 6 Doesn’t Have Early Access, According To Take-Two

Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games have defended Grand Theft Auto 6’s $80 standard edition price point, which represents a $10 increase over the traditional $70 AAA game pricing. Speaking during a quarterly earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick called the pricing “phenomenal value” and an “incredible bargain” for the open-world experience.

Zelnick justified the $80 base price by noting that video game pricing has not kept pace with inflation. The standard edition includes the base single-player experience, while the $100 Ultimate Edition adds exclusive content including a bonus mission, shops, premium vehicles, weapons, and apparel spread throughout the story.

The pricing decision has generated discussion among fans, particularly regarding the $20 premium for the Ultimate Edition and speculation that it may push consumers toward the higher price. However, Take-Two maintained that the value proposition justifies both price points.

Notably, GTA 6 will not feature early access as an additional paid perk, unlike Take-Two’s 2K Sports lineup (NBA 2K, WWE 2K, PGA Tour). Zelnick explained that Rockstar made the strategic decision to forego additional monetization opportunities in favor of providing consumer value. Currently, only the two standard editions are available for preorder—no additional special editions or early access options.

The company’s commitment to a limited edition structure and absence of paid early access represents a different approach from its sports game franchises, which regularly offer early access bonuses as premium features.
