Manga Million Explained, Why Everyone’s Talking About One Piece Publisher’s Bold New Manga Project
Shueisha, the publisher behind global manga phenomena including One Piece, Dragon Ball, and Naruto, has unveiled Manga Million, an ambitious new digital repository marking a significant milestone for the company. Launched in celebration of Shueisha’s 100th anniversary, Manga Million makes over one million pages of manga content available in 100 languages, with worldwide access for international audiences—with the notable exception of Japan.
The initiative was announced through an unconventional medium: a special one-shot manga chapter titled “Onwards! The Expendable Expedition” by Takeshi Sakurai. The one-shot appeared on Manga Plus, Shueisha’s dedicated digital reading platform for international readers, and marks the first English translation of Sakurai’s work, making it a symbolic introduction to the new project.
This release represents a major expansion of Shueisha’s digital publishing strategy, bringing a vast catalog of titles to global audiences through a centralized platform. By leveraging Manga Plus as the distribution channel and announcing the initiative through manga itself, Shueisha has demonstrated a creative approach to engaging its international fanbase. The project underscores the publisher’s commitment to increasing manga accessibility worldwide while celebrating its centennial milestone.
