Why Escape from Tarkov’s Lead Designer Left After Nine Years – And What Comes Next

Jean Tyulegenov, Lead Game Designer at Battlestate Games, departed the studio in May after over nine years with the company. As the second-most influential figure at the studio behind founder Nikita Buyanov, his resignation marked a significant departure from the team that developed Escape from Tarkov.

Tyulegenov’s exit occurred shortly after Battlestate Games released Escape from Tarkov in full 1.0 state, marking a major milestone for the long-running multiplayer first-person shooter. In an exclusive interview, he revealed that he left to pursue new creative opportunities and greater challenges in game design.

The veteran designer has joined Nomion Games, where he will lead development on Rush is Real, a new project. This move represents a significant transition for Tyulegenov, who played a pivotal role in shaping the design direction and mechanics of Escape from Tarkov throughout its development and live-service evolution.

The timing of his departure suggests Tyulegenov may have viewed the 1.0 release as a natural conclusion to a major chapter, prompting him to seek fresh creative horizons. His departure highlights the ongoing industry trend of senior talent pursuing new challenges and greater creative influence at different studios.
