Bethesda 40th anniversary sale knocks 50% off Doom: The Dark Ages - Revelations just a month after launch

Bethesda is conducting a 40th anniversary sale on Steam through August 13, offering discounts across its entire game catalogue, including titles from subsidiaries id Software and Arkane Studios. The promotion has drawn particular attention for aggressive pricing on recent releases, notably Doom: The Dark Ages and its latest expansion.

The expansion Revelations, which launched on July 7, is now available at 50% off—reducing the price from $20 to $10 just one month after release. The base game Doom: The Dark Ages is also steeply discounted at 67% off, bringing it down to $23. These substantial reductions on newly-released content reflect Bethesda’s strategy to drive player engagement during its anniversary milestone.

The sale timing aligns with QuakeCon, the annual gaming event traditionally associated with Bethesda, positioning it as a strategic promotional push to celebrate the company’s 40-year history while building momentum for its major franchises. Revelations has earned strong critical reception since launch, with PC Gamer’s Rory Norris awarding it a 90% score and describing it as “a beast of a shooter.”

The significant price reduction on such recently-released content suggests Bethesda is prioritizing user acquisition and engagement metrics over immediate revenue from the new expansion—a common approach in competitive gaming markets.
