God of War TV series sees further recasts as Amazon seeks older actors for Atreus and Thrud

Amazon’s God of War television adaptation is undergoing significant casting changes as production continues on the live-action series. Ryan Hurst, who portrayed Kratos in Season 1, departed from the project following a severe bicep tear sustained during on-set filming that required surgical intervention. The injury was serious enough to warrant a production pause, and rather than delay filming further awaiting Hurst’s recovery, Amazon has elected to recast the iconic lead role. Actor Dave Bautista is reportedly in negotiations to assume the mantle of Kratos for future seasons.

Beyond the unexpected recasting of Kratos, Amazon has also announced planned changes to the actors portraying Atreus and Thrud, which will take effect beginning in Season 2. Unlike Hurst’s injury-prompted departure, these additional recasts represent deliberate creative decisions rather than emergency production adjustments. The strategic casting refresh allows the production to secure age-appropriate actors as the characters mature throughout the series.
