Deborah Ann Woll Says Tales from Woodcreek Season 2 Is ‘Clue at the Overlook Hotel’

Deborah Ann Woll and filmmaker Ed Gass-Donnelly have created Tales from Woodcreek, a Dungeons & Dragons campaign set in a haunted colonial village. Rather than developing a concept and then scouting locations, the creators found their inspiration through the location itself: Toronto’s Black Creek Pioneer Village. The historic site’s weathered buildings, creaking staircases, and centuries-old structures naturally inspired the spooky, mysterious atmosphere that defines the show.

“We just got so inspired by the place,” Gass-Donnelly told Polygon. The production’s site-specific approach meant the creative team tailored the adventure specifically to the real spaces they explored, allowing the fictional town of Woodcreek to grow organically from the environment. Season 2 has been compared to “Clue at the Overlook Hotel,” suggesting a blend of mystery and horror elements.

Season 1 is currently airing, with the show demonstrating how grounding a narrative in a real, atmospheric location can enhance immersion and allow environmental storytelling to shape creative direction. By filming in an actual historic village rather than a traditional studio, the creators leveraged the inherent character and history of Black Creek Pioneer Village to inform their narrative choices.
