Indie Games Are Breaking Out–But It’s Still Tough Out There

The indie game market continues its strong performance in 2026, with developer House House’s co-op adventure Big Walk achieving a major sales milestone: over one million units sold in less than a week. Published by Panic, the puzzle-exploration game—which emphasizes cooperative play and exploration—has demonstrated the commercial viability of smaller independent releases.

This success reflects a broader trend of indie games gaining significant commercial traction. Other independent titles have similarly exceeded expectations: Ball X Pit recently surpassed 2 million units sold while announcing future content updates, and the raising sim/RPG hybrid Mewgenics also crossed the one million sales mark.

For small development teams and publishers, reaching one million copies represents a tremendous achievement—a milestone that many major commercial releases from large publishers fail to accomplish. Big Walk’s rapid success underscores both the growing audience appetite for indie titles and the potential for independent developers to achieve mainstream commercial success, even as market competition remains fierce.
