Darkest Dungeon Is Getting an Expansion from a Dark Souls Veteran

Red Hook Studios’ acclaimed 2016 roguelike RPG Darkest Dungeon is expanding across multiple formats. New downloadable content arrives on August 18, while a crowdfunding campaign launching in October will fund an upcoming expansion featuring additional heroes and encounters. The expansion is being developed with a Dark Souls veteran, though specific details about their involvement are not provided in available information.

In addition to game content, Vault Comics will publish canonical graphic novels expanding the Darkest Dungeon universe. Horror writer John Lees is involved in crafting these narratives, which explore the mythology surrounding humanity’s battle against an ancient evil unleashed when the player’s ancestor pursued forbidden knowledge and power.

The announcements demonstrate Red Hook Studios’ commitment to expanding the franchise across multiple media. Darkest Dungeon 2 launched in 2023, and the original game remains popular for its distinctive approach to roguelike design—combining punishing difficulty with psychological mechanics that track character sanity alongside physical health. The game’s focus on the mental and physical toll of adventuring differentiates it within the genre.

With August DLC providing immediate new content and an October crowdfunding campaign for a larger expansion, supported by canonical graphic novel tie-ins, Red Hook Studios is leveraging diverse media to grow the Darkest Dungeon franchise.
