EVE Online studio hires former Icelandic minister to lead autonomous AI efforts

Fenris Creations (formerly CCP Games) has appointed former Icelandic minister Áslaug Arna Sigurbjörnsdóttir as senior director of AI partnerships. Sigurbjörnsdóttir brings extensive government experience from her tenure as Iceland’s minister of justice and minister of higher education, science, and innovation. In her new role, she will lead Fenris’s collaborative initiatives with AI laboratories, universities, policymakers, and strategic partners on research efforts centered around EVE Frontier, the survival-focused spinoff of the long-running space MMO EVE Online. The appointment signals Fenris’s serious commitment to advancing autonomous AI research within gaming. The studio’s recent independence—achieved earlier in 2026 following a minority investment from Google—has provided the foundation for pursuing ambitious research initiatives that bridge game development with cutting-edge AI development. The hire reflects broader industry efforts to explore AI integration in games while establishing formal partnerships with academic and policy institutions.
