GTA 6 Preorder Numbers Won’t Be Revealed Because They Could Be Misleading, Take-Two CEO Says

Take-Two Interactive’s CEO Strauss Zelnick has revealed that Grand Theft Auto 6 has received unprecedented preorder numbers that vastly exceed the company’s internal expectations. However, the publisher has decided not to disclose the actual figures to the public or investors.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Zelnick explained the reasoning behind this decision. While the demand for GTA 6 preorders is extraordinary, he expressed uncertainty about whether these numbers are meaningful indicators of future sales performance. He suggested that the massive preorder surge could represent a “pull forward” of sales that would naturally occur later in the game’s lifecycle, rather than indicating genuinely higher total demand.

Zelnick emphasized that Take-Two believes releasing the raw preorder data could be misleading to investors. He noted that the unprecedented nature of GTA 6’s preorder demand means there is no historical precedent to interpret the figures against. “I’ve reminded people that we simply don’t know the demand curve because it’s just never happened before,” Zelnick stated, highlighting the difficulty in drawing meaningful conclusions from such unprecedented metrics.

This decision reflects Take-Two’s cautious approach to investor communication, prioritizing accuracy over headline-grabbing figures. Rather than leveraging the record-breaking preorder numbers as a marketing talking point, the company is taking a measured stance by acknowledging the anomalous nature of the data and refusing to present it without proper context.
