20 Years Later, One of the Best Platformers Ever Officially Makes A Comeback

Swedish developer Nifflas’ beloved platformer Knytt, originally released as freeware in 2006, has received an official 20th anniversary remake titled Knytt Classic. The charming and influential indie title spawned two sequels—Knytt Stories and Knytt Underground—and established itself as a classic in the platformer genre. The original game has now been completely rebuilt for modern hardware compatibility.

Knytt Classic has been developed by Bit Kid, the studio behind indie titles Chasm and Wolfhound. The remake is pixel-perfect and fully updated to run smoothly on contemporary systems. Maintaining the original’s philosophy, Knytt Classic is released for free with no paywall, ensuring accessibility for all players. The remake was announced and released Monday.

Developer James Petruzzi from Bit Kid emphasized the original game’s influence on his career, stating that Knytt “was hugely influential on my path as a game developer.” The team leveraged tools and techniques developed for Petruzzi’s previous projects to modernize the platformer while preserving its essential character.

The 20th anniversary edition is now available on Steam at no cost, allowing both longtime fans and new players to experience one of indie gaming’s most significant platformer contributions.
