Microsoft confirms that it won’t be bringing a transparency slider to Windows 11 anytime soon: Says developers have the freedom to build their own tools to allow this
Microsoft has officially confirmed that a customizable transparency slider for Windows 11 is not currently in development, with no immediate plans to add the feature. The confirmation came from Mach Rogers, Partner Director of Design at Microsoft, via social media, in response to user requests for functionality similar to Apple’s recently introduced Liquid Glass transparency slider in iOS.
While Windows has supported transparency and blur effects for an extended period, the operating system has never offered users native controls to adjust the intensity or strength of these visual effects. This limitation prompted the feature request, as users sought parity with Apple’s more granular customization options.
Rather than committing to developing this feature natively, Microsoft indicated that developers have the freedom to create their own third-party solutions. The company specifically recommended Windhawk as an alternative for users seeking transparency adjustments. Windhawk is a third-party tool that enables Windows customization beyond native capabilities.
The decision reflects Microsoft’s approach to certain Windows features—allowing the third-party ecosystem to fill gaps rather than implementing every requested feature directly into the operating system. This strategy has both advantages and drawbacks: it enables rapid innovation through community-driven tools but leaves users dependent on third-party solutions for relatively basic customization options.
