Overwatch’s Battle Pass Overhaul Will Let You Swap Out Skins You Don’t Want

Overwatch is implementing significant battle pass changes in Season 4, addressing long-standing concerns about the live service model’s reliance on fear of missing out (FOMO). Blizzard recognizes that with the game’s 50+ hero roster, not every battle pass contains rewards for each player’s favorite characters, creating frustration among the playerbase.

To address this, Blizzard is restructuring the battle pass into smaller, more focused tracks that allow players to pursue rewards that genuinely interest them more quickly. Critically, the new system includes an option for players to swap out skins they don’t want, giving greater control over battle pass progression.

Equally significant is Blizzard’s decision to permanently unvault old battle passes. Starting in Season 4, a specific previous season’s battle pass will become available halfway through every subsequent season and remain permanently available thereafter. Players who previously purchased these limited-time passes will maintain their access, while new players can acquire them without the traditional time constraints. This represents a meaningful shift away from the pure FOMO-driven monetization that has traditionally defined live service battle passes.
