Windows 11 is pulling picture passwords and pushing people to PINs, passwords, and biometrics
Microsoft is phasing out picture passwords in Windows 11, removing the ability to create new picture password accounts in a recent update. While existing users who already have picture passwords enabled can continue using them, the feature is being gradually deprecated as part of a broader Microsoft initiative to move authentication away from password-based systems.
The company is actively promoting more secure authentication methods, including PINs, facial recognition biometrics, and fingerprint authentication. Microsoft occasionally recommends passkeys as a modern authentication standard, though passkeys cannot currently be used to directly log into Windows 11 PCs.
Picture passwords, introduced during the Windows 8 era, allowed users to set up image-based authentication using gesture-based interactions. While this feature offered a unique alternative to traditional password entry, Microsoft determined that other authentication methods provide stronger security benefits and are better suited for modern computing environments.
This transition reflects a broader industry movement toward reducing reliance on password-based authentication in favor of multi-factor authentication and biometric security solutions. By encouraging users to adopt PINs, biometric authentication, and passwordless methods, Microsoft aims to enhance overall system security and reduce vulnerabilities associated with traditional password management.
